Hugo de Groot

also known as Grotius (1583-1645)

At the age of eight he wrote poems in Latin, by the age of 11 he was studying at the University of Leiden. At the age of 15 he obtained doctoral degrees in both secular and church law in France. The French King referred to him as ‘Le miracle d’Hollande’. At seventeen, he commenced his career as a lawyer in The Hague, and at 25 he was a respected prosecutor for the two highest courts in Holland and Zeeland. We are speaking of Hugo de Groot.
